Porsche Wants High-Performance Electric Cars, Testing Plug-In Panamera

With a starting price of $95,000 you could own the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. The car should get about 34.5 mpg, which is pretty incredible considering the car produces 380 horsepower and can go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The combination of a supercharged, direct-injected 3.0-liter V-6 and an electric motor is not only used in the Cayenne, but also in the Volkswagen Touareg hybrid; its performance may be closer to that of the standard, V-6–powered Panamera. With a top speed of 167 mph, the car can run in a purely electric mode for approximately one mile.

Power for the electric mill is stored in a traditional nickel-metal hydride battery, and a regenerative braking system recharges the cells during deceleration.

Sandwiched between the V6 and the eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission is a 34kW (47-hp) electric motor that brings overall output up to 380 hp and makes this Panamera the world’s first full parallel hybrid luxury sedan.
